Report: Cardinals fear TE Maxx Williams has season-ending knee injury

Oct 11, 2021, 7:58 AM | Updated: 2:08 pm

Arizona Cardinals tight end Maxx Williams was carted off the field Sunday after taking a hit to the lower leg against the San Francisco 49ers, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added Monday morning that the team believes it will end his season.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury did not have an update on the tight end when he met with the media on Monday. He added the team should know more over the next couple days.

The Cardinals led 10-0 when Williams exited the game.

Williams caught a pass with 2:41 left in the first half and was hit out of bounds in his right leg, which buckled.

Arizona had backup tight end Demetrius Harris and practice squad call-up Ross Travis on the active roster for the game. Travis was called up because tight end Darrell Daniels was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list earlier in the week heading into the 17-10 win against the San Francisco 49ers.

Harris ended up playin 32 snaps on the day (52% of the offensive snaps), while Travis appeared in nine.

The Cardinals also have Bernhard Seikovits on the practice squad. The Austrian joined the team on an international player exception.

Williams was a key piece of the Cardinals offense as a run-blocker who had expanded his role in the passing offense.

He made 16 catches on 17 targets for 193 yards and one touchdown through the first five games before his injury.

Williams joined the Cardinals in 2019 in his first season away from the Baltimore Ravens and earned a midseason contract extension in his first year with the team. That two-year deal ends after this season.
