Arizona basketball moves up to No. 6 in AP rankings

Jan 10, 2022, 11:32 AM

The Arizona Wildcats are now the sixth-ranked team in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll despite little action over the past two-plus weeks.

The Wildcats (12-1) have played in one game since Dec. 22, a 95-79 win against the Washington Huskies last Monday. They were ranked No. 8 heading into that game and were scheduled to face rival Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday before COVID-19 protocols for the Sun Devils led to a cancellation.

Two teams the Wildcats were supposed to play a week prior, USC and UCLA, have moved up the rankings. The Bruins (10-1) shifted up from fifth to third, while the USC Trojans (13-0) went from seventh to fifth. The teams have yet to reschedule their matchups with Arizona.

Baylor remains the unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll once again.

The reigning national champion Bears earned all 61 first-place votes in Monday’s poll for the fourth time in five weeks. Baylor (15-0) beat Oklahoma and TCU last week to push its winning streak to 21 games dating to last year’s title run in the Indianapolis bubble.

Gonzaga, UCLA, Auburn and USC rounded out the top five. The Tigers jumped five spots to No. 4, while the Trojans rose two spots to hit their highest ranking since last reaching No. 5 in December 1974.

Arizona, Purdue, Duke, Kansas and Michigan State rounded out a reshuffled group of the same top-10 teams from last week.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
