Despite it being the fourth top-20 team the Sun Devils have faced since Jan. 24 and the second top-seven team in eight days, ASU exceeded all expectations.
Arizona State took its first halftime lead (34-32) in Pac-12 play to the locker room behind 14 first-half points from guard Marreon Jackson off the bench.
Jackson finished the game with 24 points, going 4-for-11 from three.
The No. 3 ranked team in the country struggled mightily getting the ball in the hoop.
It took the Bruins more than three minutes to score their first bucket in the second half, to which ASU had already extended a two-point lead to a 10 point lead.
ASU continued to protect the lead behind a gritty defensive performance.
Despite shooting 37.5% in regulation, UCLA stormed back from an 11 point deficit to force overtime.
After a back and forth period and missed game-winning buckets by both teams, the game went to double overtime.
In double OT, both teams struggled to score, scoring eight combined points in the five-minute period before heading to yet another OT period.
In triple overtime, the Sun Devils took over scoring their first four shots in the period en-route to victory.
This was the Sun Devils’ first win over a ranked opponent this season and snaps a six-game losing streak against ranked teams. This also marks ASU’s eighth ever win over a top-three team.
