The Phoenix Mercury re-signed guard Shey Peddy on Tuesday, the team announced.
The guard originally joined the team in the 2020 WNBA Bubble in Florida after she was waived by the Washington Mystics.
Peddy averaged career highs in scoring (5.4), assists (2.5), rebounds (2.3) and minutes played (17.5) last season.
“Every team needs a player like Shey Peddy, who will step into any role asked of her, plays hard on every possession, is not afraid to defend the other team’s best player, or to take the big shot – or free-throws – when her team needs her to,” Mercury GM Jim Pitman said in a press release.
“Shey is loved by her teammates and our fans, and we feel fortunate she will continue to be a member of the Phoenix Mercury. Welcome back, Shey.”
After hiring Mercury head coach Vanessa Nygaard around two weeks ago, Phoenix has stayed busy on the roster construction front.
On Jan. 31, the Mercury cleared up cap space by sending Kia Vaughn to the Atlanta Dream in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
The following day, Phoenix re-signed wing Sophie Cunningham, who posted career highs in scoring (5.6), rebounding (2.0) and assists (1.1) last season.
Then came Thursday’s three-team sign-and-trade with the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever to acquire 2018 third overall pick Diamond DeShields. The guard averaged 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2021.
The next day, Phoenix added 2021 WNBA leading scorer Tina Charles to the mix, joining a talented Mercury core that includes point guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, center Brittney Griner and the anticipated return of future Hall of Famer Diana Taurasi.
