Former Arizona Cardinals tight end and free agent Darrell Daniels signed with the Houston Texans on Monday.
Daniels first joined the Cardinals off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks midway through the 2018 season and was with Arizona since.
The reliable depth piece used in the Cardinals’ formations with multiple tight ends had one catch for zero yards last season. Daniels had a career year as a pass catcher in 2020, reeling in eight receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown.
After Daniels played 365 snaps that season in his position group that included Dan Arnold and Maxx Williams, a season-ending injury to Williams in Week 5 changed the tight end rotation to Daniels and Demetrius Harris. That was only for one week, however, as Zach Ertz’s arrival in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles made Ertz the clear No. 1 and ended any intrigue as to whether it would be Daniels or Harris.
Daniels’ and Harris’ snap counts varied by week in terms of who was the second-string tight end alongside Ertz. Daniels ended the year at 269 snaps while Harris got 214.
Both of them, though, are not on the roster for 2022. Arizona brought back both Ertz and Williams in free agency while also drafting the top-rated tight end in the draft Trey McBride in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
