Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball transfer guard Courtney Ramey will be suspended three games for playing in the Portsmouth Invitational, his father told Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

The Portsmouth Invitational is not an NCAA-certified event, thus why Ramey’s participation yielded a suspension. The invitational is for lesser-known prospects looking to improve their draft stock.

On the bright side for the Wildcats, their first three games are against Nicholls (Southland), Southern University (SWAC) and Utah Tech (WAC). Ramey will be eligible to return to the team ahead of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 21.

247Sports ranked Ramey as the No. 17 transfer, citing his elite-level “point-of-attack” defensive prowess. In four years at Texas, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged a steal per game.

His three-and-D ability positioned him well to replace the role of now Chicago Bulls guard Dalen Terry.

Though Ramey is listed as four inches shorter than the former Wildcat, he has a knack for getting under the opposition’s skin on defense.

He’s also plenty serviceable as a shooter. In 128 games for the Longhorns, Ramey shot 36.5% from three on 4.2 attempts per game.

In 2020-21, he shot a career-best 41.4% from behind the arc on 4.5 attempts per game.
