On the latest edition of the State of the Sun Devils podcast, Jeremy Schnell, Jesse Morrison and Mitch Vareldzis discuss Arizona State football’s near-upset of No. 5 Washington.
ASU (1-5) lost 15-7 to the Huskies (7-0) and star quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
The Sun Devils held the Washington offense to no touchdowns and 13 yards rushing. The 13 yards rushing allowed were especially positive as ASU has been atrocious stopping the run this season. ASU forced four turnovers in the game, including picking off Penix Jr. twice.
The game swung against the Sun Devils on a pick-six by quarterback Trenton Bourguet late in the ballgame that proved to be Washington’s only touchdown in the entire game. The decision by the Arizona State staff was put into question because they decided to go for it on a fourth down from the Washington 12-yard line rather than kicking a field goal. Instead of the game most likely being 10-6, it was 12-7 after the interception.
Despite racking up their sixth loss in a row, ASU has continued to make games interesting with better opponents.
The Sun Devils kept it close for a good amount of the game against then-No. 5 USC, lost a close one to Cal on the road, came back home to lose 27-24 against Deion Sanders and Colorado before the loss to the Huskies.
Arizona State has ranked opponents coming up in three of the next four weeks.
