Diamondbacks’ injured list tracker: Ketel Marte goes down after several comeback attempts

Aug 19, 2024, 2:44 PM | Updated: 9:01 pm

As the Arizona Diamondbacks received a clean bill of health for the starting rotation, the lineup has taken hit after hit in the second half of the season.

Stalwarts Christian Walker, Gabriel Moreno and most recently Ketel Marte landed on the injured list, putting a greater emphasis on Arizona’s lineup depth and pitching in the midst of a tight pennant race.

Arizona not only has an opportunity to claim a National League Wild card spot, but contend for the NL West. Injuries will provide further adversity.

Injuries have played a pivotal role early this season for the Diamondbacks, but the club managed to stay above water and breakout, especially once July hit. Can they continue to stack wins with so much offensive production on the shelf?

Here is a running tracker of the Diamondbacks’ injured list:

Which Arizona Diamondbacks are on the injured list?

10-day injured list

2B Ketel Marte (left ankle sprain, Aug. 19) – Marte first went down on Aug. 10, as Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs slid past second base and into Marte’s ankle. Marte came out of the game with what the club called a contusion. He did not have imaging.

Marte returned to the lineup two days later but left the game after his first at-bat. The club then called it a low-grade ankle sprain and kept him out of the lineup for three days. He made his return on Aug. 17 as the designated hitter and pinch hit the following day. However, he collapsed after a check swing and needed assistance exiting the field. That was the last straw that landed him on the IL.

C Gabriel Moreno (left adductor strain, Aug. 6) – Moreno went down hard while running out an infield single in Cleveland. Surgery was ruled out, but Moreno’s timeline was less clear than Walker. Arizona called up Adrian Del Castillo to help bridge the gap. Manager Torey Lovullo has expressed confidence Moreno will return this season.

1B Christian Walker (left oblique strain, July 30) – Walker felt tight going into a game, and the feeling worsened until he had to come out. He suffered a low-grade oblique strain, and Walker expressed the belief he could get back in the lineup approximately three weeks later. The injury occurred just before the trade deadline, and Arizona traded for Josh Bell to fill in.

60-day injured list

RHP Bryce Jarvis (sprained right elbow, retroactive to July 31) – Jarvis is likely done pitching for the Diamondbacks in 2024 after he posted a 3.19 ERA in 59.1 innings. Surgery is not likely for the right-hander.

LHP Kyle Nelson (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, April 23) – Lovullo said Nelson is out for the season after he underwent surgery with Dr. Gregory Pearl on May 6.

RHP Drey Jameson (Tommy John surgery) – Jameson is out for the season.

Minor leaguers on IL

SS Jordan Lawlar (right thumb surgery, March 28; hamstring strain, June 17) – Lawlar suffered a UCL tear in his thumb just before the season and went on the 60-day IL. After two months, Lawlar made a triumphant return on June 11, hitting .400 with a 1.179 OPS in four games before a hamstring injury put him back on the IL on June 17. During a rehab assignment in early July, Lawlar suffered a setback that would knock him out for 6-8 weeks.
