Arizona drops in polls following close road loss

Jan 25, 2016, 1:15 PM

The Arizona Wildcats dropped a few spots in the polls after a 1-1 weekend in the Bay Area.

After taking care of Stanford 71-57, the Wildcats lost a tight one in Berkley against the Cal Bears on Saturday night, 74-73. The contest was close throughout, with Arizona having a chance for the win at the buzzer. Guard Gabe York mishandled the dribble, gained control with time winding down and ended up with a contested shot that wasn’t meant to be.

Going into the weekend Arizona (16-4, 4-3) was ranked No. 12 in the country. On Monday when the new polls were released they round themselves at No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

This week they will host the Oregon schools. First up will be the Oregon Ducks on Thursday.

The top of the poll remained the same. Oklahoma, despite losing to Iowa State last week, remains No. 1. Unlike last week, when the Sooners were a unanimous No. 1, North Carolina is a close second.

Oklahoma (16-2) received 36 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel on Monday, seven more than the Tar Heels (18-2), who remained second.

Iowa jumped from ninth to third, the Hawkeyes’ highest ranking since January 1987. They were followed by Kansas and Texas A&M, which is at its highest ranking ever. Villanova, Xavier, Maryland, West Virginia and Providence round out the Top 10.
