Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a football game. So, we will give you a fork report, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from ASU’s October 27 loss to UCLA. Final score: UCLA 45, Arizona State 43.
The Good:
Sun Devil junior college transfer Marion Grice continues to impress. He scored three touchdowns: two receiving and one rushing, giving him a total of 12 touchdowns on the season, which leads the team.
Quarterback Taylor Kelly for the the third time in five games passed for more than 300 yards. He completed 25-of-35 for 315 yards. Also, the decision to change field goal kickers paid off. Jon Mora, replacing Alex Garoutte, made all three of his attempts.
The Bad:
The Sun Devils committed only four penalites — all in the first half — but three came at crucial points in the game. A pair of defensive penalties (LB Carl Bradford offsides, DL Junior Onyeali roughing the passer) on third down kept drives going that ultimately resulted in UCLA touchdowns. Offensive lineman Brice Schwab was called for holding that erased what would’ve been a go-ahead touchdown by Kevin Ozier.
He Said It:
“We just didn’t show up and play defensively today,” head coach Todd Graham said. “We missed a lot of tackles today. We just didn’t get it done.”
Noted:
Defensive tackle Will Sutton (bone bruise) did not play. The Pac-12 leader in sacks (8.5) and tackles for a loss (14), Sutton this week was added to the Maxwell Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate football player in America.
Right guard Andrew Sampson (ankle) also did not play, ending a streak of 28 consecutive starts.
Coming Up Next:
The Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2) are at Oregon State next Saturday, November 3. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.
