ASU uses strong first half to beat Bethune-Cookman: By the Numbers

Center Eric Jacobsen played 34 minutes for Arizona State on Monday, logging 13 points and 10 rebounds to help his team beat visiting Bethune-Cookman, 49-39.

The Sun Devils took a 33-14 lead to the locker room at halftime, but managed just 16 second-half points against their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents.

Jacobsen and forward Jonathan Gilling were the only players in the contest to score in double digits, with the latter hitting 3-of-5 three-point attempts.

ASU held a 42-20 lead with 12 minutes left in the game, but were outscored 19-7 down the stretch and once saw their 22-point lead trimmed to eight with under a minute to go.

Neither team moved the ball particularly well, as the game’s leaders in assists had a total of two — a mark met by four players Monday.

The Sun Devils jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the course of the first 3:32 of the game. Jacobsen posted six of those points.

Bethune-Cookman hit just 1 of their first 12 field goal attempts, ultimately shooting 31.8 percent from the floor on the night. ASU ended up hardly better, making just as many field goals, with 14, though shooting at a 37.8 percent clip.

Herb Sendek’s squad later stretched its lead to 18-2, holding the visiting Wildcats to a single field goal over the first 10:12 of the contest.

The Sun Devils committed 19 turnovers on the night, with both Tra Holder and Jonathan Gilling turning the ball over four times apiece. Bethune-Cookman had 17 turnovers Monday.

Jacobsen, no. 21, added four blocks, two steals and an assist to his double-double at Wells-Fargo Arena. He also shot well, hitting 3 of his 4 field goal attempts while going 7-for-9 at the line.
