Kolb’s fit in Cardinals’ offense questioned

Aug 9, 2011, 6:19 PM | Updated: 7:37 pm

Kevin Kolb appears to be a good fit with his coaches and teammates, but is he the right guy to run the Cardinals’ offense?

According to ESPN’s Mike Sando, the jury is still out on that.

Sports 620 KTAR’s Paul Calvisi doesn’t think the new QB will have any problems.

“He has plenty of arm strength, he seems to read and recognize the defense just fine, from what I can tell it’s not a question.”

Calvisi notes that Kolb just doesn’t have the track record — in any scheme — to give someone 100 percent confidence.

Sports 620 KTAR’s Ron Wolfley said the system isn’t really an issue anyway.

“It’s not like the West Coast system doesn’t have a deep pass,” he said. “It’s more of a philosophy of how you’re going to call plays.

“It’s a lot to do about nothing, to me.”

So if the system doesn’t matter, what could cause Kolb to fail? Doug Franz says there are only a few reasons why a QB would not succeed in any given system, none of which Kolb seems to have an issue with.

“Whisenhunt’s system is ‘if the big play is there, take it’ and if you’re a little bit scared of the pass rush, if you don’t trust your offensive line,” he said on Sports 620 KTAR, “you’re going to dump it off before you get hit and probably before that receiver is truly open and has created separation.

“When you watch Kevin Kolb, he doesn’t seem like a guy that’s withering from the pass rush and he keeps his eyes down field.”

The anti-Matt Leinart, perhaps? That’s what the Cardinals coaches are certainly hoping for.
