The Arizona Cardinals announced the signing of punter Drew Butler Monday, just hours before their-season opening game against the San Diego Chargers at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Butler was out of the league last season, but punted in all 16 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012, averaging 43.8 yards on 77 punts.

He was released by Detroit during the preseason after losing a position battle to Lions’ fifth-round pick Sam Martin.

The 25-year-old, who played his college ball at Georgia, is the son of former Cardinals kicker Kevin Butler.

The move was necessary for the Cardinals because veteran Dave Zastudil has been bothered by a groin injury.
