Fitzgerald sets a deadline, but what if it passes with no contract?

September 4, 2011 has suddenly become an important date in Arizona Cardinals history.
It’s been reported that if the Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald don’t agree to a contract extension by then the talks will be put on hold until the season ends.
The Cardinals, certainly, do not want to see the Pro Bowler reach the free agent market, because if he does there’s the potential for a team to make an offer that convinces Fitz to leave the only NFL team he’s ever played for.
“Do you trade Larry Fitzgerald at that point,” Cardinals insider Paul Calvisi asked. “I know it’s incomprehensible; you can’t let the man walk in free agency…at that point you have to protect your own interests.”
Without a doubt, no one in the Valley is hoping to see that happen. But what if we reach September 5 and an extension has not been signed?
Not a problem.
In fact, Calvisi thinks September 4 was chosen because people tend to work their best when running out of time, so they chose a date that leaves a little room to spare, you know, just in case.
“That still gives them an extra week of wiggle room until September 11 and the first regular season game,” he said.
However, it may not get anywhere close to that point.
“In fact, the over/under, I would put, I don’t know, how about a certain kickoff luncheon,” Calvisi said. “How great would it be, with everyone in attendance and all the cameras, to introduce Larry Fitgerald and a brand new honkin huge contract extension.”
Calvisi is speaking of the annual kickoff luncheon, which will take place on August 30th, less than two weeks from now.
The countdown is on.
