Arizona Diamondbacks trade Martin Prado to New York Yankees

Jul 31, 2014, 8:25 PM | Updated: 11:31 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded Martin Prado to the New York Yankees for catcher Peter O’Brien and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The deal was first reported by Yes Network’s Jack Curry.

The D-backs are dealing Prado less than two seasons after he was the centerpiece in the trade that saw Arizona part with Justin Upton.

Prado played in 261 games for the D-backs, hitting .278 with 19 home runs and 124 RBI. This season he’s batting .270 with five home runs and 42 RBI, and the D-backs were set to owe him roughly $25 million over the rest of this season and the next two.

One of the 30-year-old Prado’s strengths is his versatility in the field. Though he played primarily third base for Arizona, he also started games at second base and left field for the team.

He is a career .290 hitter with 71 home runs and 410 RBI.

In exchange for Prado the D-backs received O’Brien, a 24-year-old who is hitting .245 with 23 home runs and 51 RBI for Double-A Trenton. Selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, he is a career .266 hitter with 65 home runs and 200 RBI over parts of three minor league seasons.

A 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed hitter, O’Brien entered the season was ranked as the Yankees’ No. 9 prospect by MLB.com.O’Brien
