Bumgarner, Giants outdo Diamondbacks in season opener: By the Numbers

Madison Bumgarner picked up the 2015 campaign right where he left off in last season’s World Series.

The San Francisco Giants pitcher earned four wins in last year’s postseason, not to mention he recorded a save in the final game of the playoffs to help his team win its third title in five years.

On Monday in Phoenix, he baffled Arizona Diamondbacks batters for seven innings to the tune of one run, six hits and one walk allowed. The Giants had a four-run lead by the time his night was over.

However, once he left the mound, Arizona showed some signs of life. Second-year infielder Jake Lamb came in as a pinch hitter and stroked the ball to the center field wall with the bases loaded, scoring three.

The San Francisco relievers finally were able to close down the eighth-inning threat, and the road team held on for a 5-4 season-opening win.

The two teams will face each again at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, with Ryan Vogelsong and Rubby De La Rosa scheduled to pitch for San Francisco and Arizona, respectively.

Here’s a look a Opening Day at Chase Field, by the numbers:

D-backs star slugger Paul Goldschmidt made his first regular season appearance since early August, but he was one of three starting positional players on the team — along with Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed — to not record a hit in the loss. The five-year veteran went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, but he did walk once, scoring on Lamb’s eighth-inning double.

Daniel Hudson, who is still feeling things out in recovering from two Tommy John surgeries, came in and pitched a scoreless eighth inning, although he did give up two hits. The inning of work was just the 28-year-old hurler’s fourth appearance in the majors since the 2012 season.

Only two players collected more than one hit for the D-backs: Ender Inciarte and Aaron Hill, both of whom went 2-for-4 on the night. The Diamondbacks strung together a respectable nine hits on the evening, but the Giants posted a whopping 13, with five batters recording a multi-hit night.

The drop-off from Bumgarner to the Giants bullpen was almost laughable, as the visiting team needed four relievers to get through the eighth inning. Santiago Casilla entered in the ninth and saved face for the staff by retiring the side in order, earning a save.

Outfielder Mark Trumbo was responsible for the D-backs’ first run batted in of the season, as he tripled to center field to drive in Inciarte in the third inning.

The three-bagger was Trumbo’s eighth of his career, including just his second with Arizona. The 29-year-old slugger finished 1-for-4 from the plate in the loss. He was also charged with the game’s lone error.

Josh Collmenter became the eighth pitcher to ever start a season opener for the D-backs, but the prestige ended there. The 29-year-old right-hander gave up five hits and a run in the first three innings, and then he got into trouble in the fifth, allowing three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Chip Hale replaced Collmenter with Andrew Chafin with two outs, but a quick Giants double scored two more runs, which were both charged to Collmenter. On the night, the D-backs starter allowed five earned runs and 10 hits in 4.2 innings while walking one and striking out four. He’ll go into his second start carrying a 9.64 ERA and an 0-1 record.

Lamb already has a double and three RBI to his name this season. In his rookie year, it took him 10 games to reach that RBI total, and he didn’t record his first double — or extra-base hit, for that matter — until his eighth MLB game.

The pinch-hit, three-run double also happened to be the first of its kind for the franchise since July 4, 2009.

The Diamondbacks fell to 10-8 all-time on Opening Days, including 0-2 against San Francisco. The D-backs better watch themselves, because past versions of the team went on to have losing seasons in five out of the previous seven times they lost season openers.
