Former Arizona State linebacker Bob Breunig, who starred in Tempe from 1971 to 1974, was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2015 induction class Friday.

The 61-year-old Breunig was a First Team All-American in 1974 for head coach Frank Kush. He was also a two-time Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-WAC selection. When he finished his career in 1974, Breunig was ASU’s all-time leading tackler with 353 (206 solo).

“Bob’s athletic achievements alone merit his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, but it is what he has accomplished off the field that sets him apart,” Ray Anderson, Vice President for University Athletics and Athletics Director, said. “He should serve as a role model to all current and future athletes, from middle school up through the NFL, and his selection to the College Football Hall of Fame validates and solidifies his place as one of the game’s greatest ambassadors.”

After leaving ASU, Breunig went on to enjoy a 10-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and helped the Cowboys to the Super Bowl championship in the 1977 season.

Dallas would advance to the postseason in nine of Breunig’s 10 years in the league.

Breunig graduated from ASU in 1977 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business marketing, and was selected to the ASU Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

He is the tenth former Sun Devil player or coach to be inducted, joining Dan Devine, Frank Kush, Danny White, Mike Haynes, John Jefferson, Ron Pritchard, John Cooper, Randall McDaniel and Pat Tillman.
