Cardinals would do well adding Packers’ Ryan Grant

While the Cardinals are scrambling to find a running back in the wake of rookie Ryan Williams’ season ending knee injury, the Packers are facing the problem of having too many options on the roster.

The odd man out may be veteran Ryan Grant, and Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro talked about the possibility of the Cardinals picking the veteran up if the Packers cut him.
Green Bay is deciding between Grant and former ASU star Dimitri Nance, with one of the two not likely to make the Week 1 roster.

“You know Grant comes at a high price and he’s injury prone, Nance comes at a low price and he’s younger,” he said. “One of those guys could be available, Arizona would probably look at either one if they become available.”

In other words, the Packers’ loss could be the Cardinals’ gain.

Then again, Grant does not come without some red flags, as he is coming back from a season ending ankle injury that he suffered in week one last year.

That’s precisely why the Packers may elect to keep the younger Nance, who has shown signs of improvement during the preseason and given the Packers reason to consider cutting Grant and his $4 million salary.

The Cardinals would welcome Grant with open arms to help take pressure off Beanie Wells.

That is contingent on the 28-year-old being given his walking papers, which seems much more likely now than it did just a few weeks ago, especially as he has slid down the depth chart.

Still, the idea of adding a player who ran for 1,253 yards just two years ago would not only be enticing for the Cardinals, but probably an opportunity they’d jump at if given the chance. After all, it appears Grant may be just the type of player they are waiting for.

“They know that there will be cuts being made and good football players will become available,” Gambadoro said.
