D-backs outfielder A.J. Pollock exits game with right groin injury

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock exited Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a right groin injury.

After hitting a ball to right field for a single in the 10th inning, Pollock was in noticeable pain running to first and was pulled from the game.

“Hit the ball, ran, felt a little grab,” Pollock said. “I mean, it wasn’t good. They just said tomorrow, these things, you do it, and then the next day is pretty much the day you really evaluate it.”

Pollock has had groin issues in the past year. He injured his left groin in September 2016 after he returned from an elbow injury, and the issue popped up again this past spring. Then, the team kept Pollock on ice as a preventative measure.

“It’s frustrating. What are you gonna do? It’s just one of those things,” he said. “That’s kind of my philosophy. No regrets. Doing everything — it’s just some stuff you can’t control. That’s my mindset.”

The injury put the D-backs in a bizarre situation with the pitcher’s spot up next and a short bench to fill in for both Pollock and Fernando Rodney due up to hit. Jeff Mathis, Yasmany Tomas, Brandon Drury and Daniel Descalso had already been used off the bench. Patrick Corbin was forced to pinch-hit in the ninth inning, and Zack Greinke took Pollock’s spot as a baserunner.

Manager Torey Lovullo said that Corbin would have played a corner outfield spot if the D-backs had forced the 11th inning.

David Peralta also exited the game earlier due to right glute tightness, though the outfielder said after the game that he doesn’t expect to be out any time. He said leaving the game was more precautionary.
