Just when it seemed like the Arizona Cardinals had potentially coughed up a tie game, two players who had struggled to live up to their expectations in 2017 came to the rescue.

Phil Dawson hit the longest field goal of his 19-year NFL career, drilling a 57-yarder with a second left to give Arizona a 27-24 win over the 7-4 Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

It capped what was a wild, punch-for-punch fourth quarter.

Earlier on, it was Arizona’s Tyrann Mathieu picking off a short pass by Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles at Arizona’s 38-yard line and 2:47 to play in the tie game. It took away a potential game-winning drive from Jacksonville.

The safety appeared to be covering a short dump-off to running back T.J. Yeldon, but instead hung around long enough to bait Bortles into attempting a pass further downfield to Dede Westbrook.

The play gave Arizona a chance to sigh in relief following its own quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, tossing a pick that set up what could have been a go-ahead drive by the Jaguars.

The Cardinals trailed, 17-16, early in the fourth quarter after former Arizona defensive end Calais Campbell scored a touchdown off a Gabbert fumble. Gabbert rebounded by finding Jaron Brown for a 52-yard touchdown pass with 9:07 to play in the game before Jacksonville tied it up, 24-24, on its following possession.

Dawson’s field goal capped a three-play, 22-yard drive.

Setting it up was a key catch from second-year running back D.J. Foster. The former ASU standout got both toes down along the sideline on a 12-yard reception with 11 seconds left before Dawson booted his longest made field goal of his career.
