Bruce Arians gives his take on current situation at QB for Cardinals

Jan 10, 2018, 7:00 AM | Updated: Jan 16, 2018, 4:16 pm

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians joined The Rich Eisen Show to talk some football and, of course, his former team.

When asked about the team’s quarterback situation, the now-retired coach isn’t set one way on whether the team should get a veteran quarterback with NFL experience or draft one.

“Look at both,” he said. “What’s the best fit for the entire organization and team? Whoever is running the offense now, if there’s a guy that fits, whoever it is in free agency, and he’s young enough — I’d still draft one.”

The opening comes after Arians’ starting quarterback Carson Palmer also announced his retirement, leaving Arizona and general manager Steve Keim with no quarterbacks under contract for next season.

Arians was then asked a follow-up question about Heisman Trophy winner and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who Arians is also split on.

“I love his intensity,” he said. “There’s a lot of things I don’t like about his intensity. I’ve gotten to know him a little bit. I want to get to know him a lot better. I love the energy he brings to the game.”

Mayfield has made headlines for his antics on the sidelines, including in a game against Kansas when the captains of his opposition refused to shake his hand.

“Those things,” Arians said when asked about the specific example of Mayfield’s intensity. “Just controlling your emotions a little bit better. Can you do that without pulling the reigns on him so hard he can’t be himself?”

When asked about who his pick is for the Super Bowl, Arians, after much deliberation, went with the Atlanta Falcons.

“Matty Ryan, and just the way their defense plays,” he said. “They have a complete football team.”

The Rich Eisen Show is televised exclusively on DIRECTV’s Audience Network. You can find out more information about the show and network here.
