Named the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach on Monday, Steve Wilks is already well down the road in filling out his coaching staff.

As the Cardinals enter into a post-Carson Palmer era with all of their backup quarterbacks hitting free agency, Wilks is expected to turn to veteran NFL coach Mike McCoy to fill in as offensive coordinator, reports 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro.

McCoy spent part of 2017 as the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator but was fired after a six-game losing streak. Previously, he served as San Diego Chargers head coach from 2013-16, where he directed a Philip Rivers-led offense.

The 45-year-old entered the NFL with the Carolina Panthers as an offensive assistant coach in 2000. He held various offensive assistant jobs with Carolina and from 2004-08 worked directly with quarterbacks.

Next, he became the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Denver. He worked as Broncos offensive coordinator from 2010-12 before being hired by San Diego.

NFL reporter Jason La Canfora said Arizona might also consider Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for the offensive coordinator job — he interviewed with the Cardinals in their coaching search process — but would also speak to McCoy and ex-Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

La Canfora reported that Wilks is expected to bring on Panthers offensive line coach Ray Brown and could try to hire Carolina linebackers coach Al Holcomb to work as his defensive coordinator.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Holcomb is expected to be Wilks’ defensive coordinator.

The Charlotte Observer also reported that Holcomb is likely headed to the Cardinals.
