Wrong sport, wrong spelling, wrong guy: Seattle TV station makes head-shaking mistake

Oct 20, 2014, 8:05 PM | Updated: 8:14 pm

Congratulations to former Seattle Sonics point guard Gary Payton on breaking Brett Favre’s all-time touchdown record!

Wait… what?

After Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke Favre’s record with his 509th career TD pass Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle TV station KOMO mentioned the milestone on air.

Minor problem, though: Whoever dug through the photo archives in the KOMO newsroom Sunday evening made a slight faux pas:

Granted, Manning wasn’t very memorable when Seattle’s football team annihilated the Broncos in last season’s Super Bowl. But Manning did recently make an appearance in Seattle, in the Seahawks’ 26-20 overtime win against Denver on Sept. 21.

A nine-time All-Star, Gary Payton certainly had an outstanding career of his own during his 17 NBA seasons. But seriously: we’re talking about a different sport, a different spelling — and Peyton is his first name, not last.

As far as honest mistakes go, there’s no way to sugarcoat it: this one is really, really bad.
