After a five-hit night with no walks in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants, the Arizona Diamondbacks offense didn’t fare much better on Wednesday night.

The difference was that six hits and two walks were enough to get a 3-2 victory, thanks in large part to Jake McCarthy’s two-RBI single in the eighth inning to give Arizona the lead.

The lone D-backs run prior to the eighth came via 26-year-old left fielder Stone Garrett, a Wednesday call-up from Triple-A Reno that made his major league debut after eight years of playing in the minors. Garrett hit an RBI double in the fourth inning to score Christian Walker.

Four innings later, Walker and Garrett hit back-to-back singles with one out to threaten to tie the game and then McCarthy two at-bats later scored both of them.

Tuesday’s loss was also similar because it was a one-run lead through seven innings, and Wednesday repeated history with reliever Joe Mantiply throwing a scoreless inning. That was greatly aided by a terrific sliding catch in center field by Daulton Varsho.

After D-backs reliever Ian Kennedy blew a save and got the loss the night before thanks to a walk-off two-run homer hit by Brandon Crawford, manger Torey Lovullo turned to right-hander Mark Melancon.

Melancon shut the door in his first save opportunity since Aug. 9 for his 17th of the year.

San Francisco got a solo homer from Lamonte Wade Jr. in the third inning off D-backs starter Zack Davies. The right-hander’s night was done after five innings, and he was replaced by reliever Chris Devenski, who allowed the Giants’ second solo dinger of the night. This one was hit by third baseman J.D. Davis.

Davies gave up five hits and two walks in 5.0 innings.

Giants starter Carlos Rodon was in a position to get a win over the D-backs this season after falling in his previous two 2022 meetings at Chase Field. Rodon struck out 11 Arizona hitters in 6.0 innings of work and allowed two hits and two walks.
