The price is right … to cut Joey Porter

Jun 14, 2011, 3:36 PM | Updated: 4:42 pm

Joey Porter’s stay in the desert could be a short one. After a disappointing 2010 season, the veteran linebacker may be cut by the Arizona Cardinals when the lockout is lifted. That’s because the price is right.

As part of a piece on FoxSports.com, NFL Analyst Adam Caplan drops an interesting bit of information about Porter’s contract situation with the club.

Veteran outside linebacker Joey Porter, who is scheduled to earn $5.75 million in base salary for the 2011 season, could be on his way out once the new league year starts. While a million of the salary is guaranteed, a source told FOXSports.com that it’s guaranteed only for injury.

That’s right, cutting Porter, as long as he doesn’t get injured in training camp, will cost the Cardinals the low-low price of absolutely nothing. It’s an amount that seems about right when you consider how little he actually improved the team’s linebacking corps in 2010.

Porter, who was supposed to give the team the pass rushing presence it has been missing for years, recorded only five sacks and 38 tackles last season.

Simple math says roughly a million dollars per sack just isn’t a good enough return on investment. Getting rid of Porter for nothing, now that’s a transaction that might make more financial sense.
