Whisenhunt to visit troops overseas

Jun 16, 2011, 3:08 PM | Updated: 4:12 pm

While NFL coaches are often in the news for football related activities, a couple of NFL coaches are making headlines for something entirely unrelated.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt and Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak will travel to the Persian Gulf to visit U.S. forces.

For security reasons, there are not a lot of details being released but the coaches will leave in late June and return sometime after the fourth of July.

“We have the opportunity to pursue our passion in the greatest country in the world and that’s a freedom that we don’t take for Granted,” Whisenhunt told the Arizona Republic.

This is the third year NFL coaches have made the trip overseas, but this year is a bit different because of the lockout.

Every year a few coaches have sacrificed time away from their teams to visit the troops but the fact that Whisenhunt and Kubiak are doing it in a season with a limited offseason and limited time to prepare says a lot about their character.

Whisenhunt’s father, brother and father-in-law all served in the Air Force so he has a understanding of what military life is like. Since he has family members who have served, the trip will likely be a little more meaningful for the Cardinals coach.
