Cameron Marshall hopes surgery allows for a pain free season

Last season, Cameron Marshall was ASU’s leading rusher.

He became the first Sun Devil running back to surpass
1,000 yards in a season since 2006, while his 18 rushing
touchdowns were tied for the most in school history.

He did all that on a bad ankle.

Imagine what he could do running pain free.

Marshall said he received a cortisone injection after the
2011 season and hoped rest would ease the pain.

No such luck.

“So then we proceeded to do the surgery (last week),” he
explained, “so I wouldn’t waste any time during the season
being hurt.

“We figured rather than going into the year taking a
chance to see if it’s going to be painful or not, we did
the surgery on it to shave down some of the bone spurs I
had in there.

“Hopefully during the season I’ll have no pain.”

Marshall did practice the first week of spring ball under
new head coach Todd Graham, but was told those three
workouts would do no further damage to the ankle.

“I got through the first week,” he said. “After practice
I was hurting pretty bad. During practice I was hurting
pretty bad.”

Marshall will spend the next couple of weeks on crutches,
meaning he will miss the rest of spring football.
However, he’s expected to make a full recovery well before
the fall and the start of the 2012 season.

“Yeah I’m very anxious,” he said of what could be a big
senior season for him. “I got a little taste of what we
do (the first week of spring practice) and I love it.

“Watching all these guys out here, I’m jealous — get to
see them make big plays, score touchdowns and do what we
all love to do. I can’t wait to get back out here and
join the rest of the group.”
