Cardinals coach Bruce Arians out of hospital, diagnosed with diverticulitis

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was released from a San Diego hospital after he fell ill with stomach pain Tuesday night.

Arians was resting at the team hotel late Wednesday morning and met with the media before noon. He said he was diagnosed with diverticulitis, the inflammation or infection of the digestive tract.

“Just a bunch of stomach pain and doubled over, which is what it does to you,” Arians said of what transpired Tuesday night. “I thought it was a kidney stone at first, but I’ve been diagnosed with diverticuli at my last colonoscopy. Good thing I do those every two years.”

Arians, who said the stomach pain was building throughout the day, said he was feeling “much better” Wednesday and is planning on being with the team at its afternoon practice. How long he is there and how much he does will be determined by how he is feeling.

“I’m too old not to listen to doctors anymore, so I have a tendency to push it,” he said. “But we’ll go out today, see how long we stay. It’s nothing serious.”

Going forward, he said the advice he received from the doctor was to change his diet a little bit and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Arians said it was odd that this issue popped up now because, as he said, he’s already been on a pretty strict diet.

Now that everyone knows it was nothing terribly serious, Arians and the team will get back to the matter at hand, which is more practice with the Chargers before their preseason game Friday. The 63-year-old said he watched tape from Tuesday night’s session Wednesday morning.

And, in classic coach fashion, he said he was upset that he had to miss the previous night’s affair.

“Obviously we got a lot of good work done,” he added. “Watch the tape and move on to today.”
