Pitchfork Preview: Arizona State opens Pac-12 play at home against the Cal Bears

Sep 22, 2016, 12:00 PM

With a perfect 3-0 non-conference record in tow, the Arizona State Sun Devils get Pac-12 play started with a game against the Cal Bears Saturday night in Tempe.

The Sun Devils escaped Texas with a 32-28 win over UTSA Friday. They needed 17 fourth-quarter points and the defense keeping the Roadrunners out of the endzone on their final five possessions.

The Bears, 2-1, are coming off a week in which they beat a highly-ranked Texas Longhorns team. In the 50-43 win, they gained more than 500 yards of total offense. The Bears’ offense is similar to the one run by Texas Tech, whom the Sun Devils beat two weeks ago.

Speaking of Texas Tech, the quarterback for the Bears is Red Raider transfer Davis Webb. His performance against Texas earned him the Pac-12 Player of the Week award.

In three games this season, Webb has thrown 13 touchdowns and amassed 1,359 yards.

The Sun Devils haven’t hosted the Bears since 2011. Last year the teams met late in the season in Berkley, with Cal prevailing 48-46. ASU had a 27-10 lead at halftime and gave up 38 points in the second half.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard on ESPN Phoenix 620.
