The Arizona Cardinals will sign quarterback Zac Dysert off their practice squad in anticipation that starter Carson Palmer might not be ready to return from concussion protocol for a Thursday game against the San Francisco 49ers, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Dysert beat out Aaron Murray for the third quarterback gig after the Cardinals parted ways with former No. 3 signal-caller Matt Barkley following the preseason.

A Miami (Ohio) product, Dysert was a seventh-round pick in 2013 by the Denver Broncos and played for four other NFL teams before landing with Arizona. He’s has not thrown a pass in a regular season NFL game.

Palmer left the fourth quarter of Arizona’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday after taking a sack and hitting his head on the turf at University of Phoenix Stadium. On Monday, head coach Bruce Arians appeared more optimistic about Palmer’s health permitting him to play on a short week, but a precautionary move isn’t surprising considering he’s yet to be cleared less than 72 hours before kickoff.

Arians said Sunday the team would be “very, very careful” not to rush Palmer back.

The Cardinals will start backup Drew Stanton at quarterback if Palmer is not able to give it a go, but there is no depth behind him without the addition of Dysert.
