Arizona Cardinals sign DT Tommy Kelly

Aug 27, 2014, 7:14 PM | Updated: 9:06 pm

The Arizona Cardinals have added a big name — and body — to their defensive line.

CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, was the first to report the team was going to sign Tommy Kelly, most recently of the New England Patriots, while ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported a one-year deal had been agreed to.

The Cardinals themselves then confirmed the move, adding they also released defensive lineman Ryan McBean to make room for Kelly.

A veteran of 10 NFL seasons — the first nine of which were spent in Oakland with the Raiders — Kelly has amassed 301 total tackles along with 36.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception.

Last season, with the Patriots, he appeared in five games, collecting 12 tackles and 2.5 sacks before landing on injured reserve due to a torn ACL.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Kelly had a career-best 7.5 sacks in 2011.

The 33-year-old will look to help replace Darnell Dockett, who tore his ACL during training camp and is lost for the season.
