Cardinals make cuts but roster not finalized yet

Sep 2, 2011, 9:03 PM | Updated: 10:58 pm

The Arizona Cardinals cut their roster to 53 players Friday, but that doesn’t mean the team you see now will be the one that opens up the season September 11 against the Carolina Panthers.

“The 53 man roster is written in pencil right now,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “This will not be the same 53 man roster that we go in to play against Carolina next week.”

The Cardinals are probably looking to add some depth at the running back and corner back positions, both of which suffered losses due to injuries this preseason.

“Obviously there is still some maneuvering to be done yet,” Whisenhunt said, “but a good portion of the team is going to stay in tact.”

Whoever the Cardinals add there is sure to be plenty of talent out there, with all teams having to cut their roster down by Saturday.

“Seven-hundred and something guys that are going to be out there,” Whisenhunt said. “You just feel like there is going to be a number of players to look at maybe somebody can help you improve your team, but were not going to make any decisions until we see what’s there for us.”

Whisenhunt isn’t ruling out picking up talent at any position, with the exception of maybe one.

“The only one that I think is pretty much safe is the quarterback,” Whisenhunt said. “Probably not looking to pick one of those guys up but if one of those top guys like Brady or Manning comes available then we’ll consider it.”
