ASU hoops coach Bobby Hurley joins protest for Black Lives Matter

Jun 8, 2020, 8:33 AM

Arizona State men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley posted photographs this weekend of him marching at a Black Lives Matter protest in Phoenix.

“Marched with family today,” Hurley wrote. “This is a movement not a moment.”

The tweet included the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag and tagged Phoenix’s Black Lives Matter community organizers.

On May 30, five days after the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police, Hurley wrote: “George Floyd is one of too many. It’s heartbreaking. It’s unacceptable. It must end.”

Hurley also previously showed public support on social media for his former player Shannon Evans’ participation in a Black Lives Matter demonstration.

In addition to protests for Floyd, demonstrators have marched through the streets of Phoenix and Scottsdale in two separate protests for social justice in memory of a black man who was killed by an Arizona police officer.

Dion Johnson, 28, was fatally shot in north Phoenix by a Department of Public Safety officer May 25, the same day that Floyd died.

A trooper on motorcycle patrol saw a car stopped on a freeway on-ramp and found Johnson passed out in the driver’s seat. The trooper said that while arresting Johnson for driving while intoxicated, Johnson attempted to grab his gun and the trooper opened fire, authorities said.

Protesters kneeled outside of the public safety department headquarters to denounce the deaths of black men and women at the hands of police nationwide.

In Scottsdale, up to 1,000 protesters walked through the city’s Old Town Sunday, with Scottsdale Police Chief Alan Rodbell marching in uniform near the front.
