Sun Devils sign highly-recruited DE Coleman

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University has signed highly-recruited defensive end Davon Coleman out of Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. Head coach Dennis Erickson announced Monday that Coleman signed his national letter of intent to study and play football for the Sun Devils for the next three seasons.

Bringing Arizona State’s 2011 recruiting class total to 19, Coleman will join James Brooks, Jamarr Jarrett and Junior Onyeali in a defensive end unit that will look to trip up opposing offenses starting next fall.

“Davon is a freak athlete who is just as fast as he was strong,” said Fort Scott head coach Jeff Sims. “He can jam the tight end, rush the passer, he can cover. People don’t realize what a coup this was for Arizona State [signing Coleman].”

Coleman chose to play for the Devils over interest from Florida, Nebraska and Ohio State. The versatile defender, who has the ability to play multiple defensive line positions and linebacker, boasts coming from high school and junior college level programs that have rich traditions of sending talented players to the FBS and NFL.

As a redshirt freshman in 2010, Coleman totaled 65 tackles, 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one interception. He also earned Honorable Mention All-Ohio recognition after his senior season at Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio.

Coleman is Arizona State’s first signed recruit out of the state of Kansas since former All-Pac-10 member and current Washington Redskins starting running back Ryan Torain, who came from Butler Community College in 2006.
