Louisville Bats to honor Muhammad Ali with special jerseys

Jan 28, 2017, 3:31 PM

On the one-year anniversary of his death, the Louisville Bats will pay tribute to Muhammad Ali, the boy from Louisville who rose to become the greatest of all time.

The Bats, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds will celebrate the boxing great during their game against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs on June 3 by wearing a special jersey with Ali’s likeness with a butterfly on the back.

Ali died on June 3 in Scottsdale after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

The tribute by the Bats is just one of many celebrations planned in the city to honor Ali, who was born in Louisville as Cassius Clay.

The city, in conjunction with the Muhammad Ali Center, will hold an “I Am Ali” festival celebrating the legacy and global humanitarian. The festival was expanded from its original 10 days to six weeks due to great community interests.

In addition to wearing the themed jerseys, there will also be other tributes and events going on in the ballpark that will highlight Ali’s “Six Core Principles” — confidence, conviction, dedications, respect, giving and spiritually.
