TEMPE, Ariz. — Just a few weeks into his tenure at Arizona State, running backs coach Shaun Aguano has settled in just in time for spring ball.

“It’s been a learning experience, but it’s been incredible,” Aguano said during ASU’s media day on Thursday.

Aguano will be working with first-team All-Pac-12 running back Eno Benjamin just a year after he broke the school’s single-season rushing record (1,642 yards).

“I’m excited to work with him,” Benjamin said. “You can tell he’s been around the right people and knows what he’s doing.”

Although the two have not had much time to speak, Aguano is looking forward to helping Benjamin improve on his already explosive abilities.

“He is incredible with the ball in his hands,” Aguano said. “I’ve enjoyed watching his film and hopefully I can help him progress throughout the year.”

ASU offensive coordinator Rob Likens said Aguano will fit in perfectly with the staff and that he looks forward to working with Aguano just because of the type of man he is.

“He’s just one of those guys that you know instantly has character,” Likens said. “There’s no hidden agendas, there’s nothing behind anything he says, everything he says is the truth — very similar to  Herm (Edwards).”

Aguano also spoke about the the effect coach Edwards had on him when he made his decision to leave his head coaching position at Chandler High School.

“I worked for coach Edwards at the Under Armor game and that was the biggest pull,” Aguano said. “Having an opportunity to work with him and the staff made it so much easier to make that move.”

Aguano led Chandler to a 63-8 record and four state championships over the past five seasons. Aguano also coached former ASU wide receiver N’Keal Harry and current ASU defensive back Chase Lucas at Chandler.
