Former Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici will return to the program as an offensive graduate assistant, the team announced Thursday.

Bercovici most recently had been playing in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football league for the San Diego Fleet and was the Sun Devils’ quarterback from 2012 to 2015. He joins a staff led by Herm Edwards, who was not with the program when Bercovici played.

“I spoke with Herm and (offensive coordinator) Rob Likens back in January when I was still doing the new league and it seemed like an opportunity that I could not pass up,” Bercovici said in a release. “I’m obviously super passionate about this school and I could not be more excited to be here and have the opportunity to work with the quarterbacks and teach them everything I have learned up to this point in my career.”

In his college career, Bercovici threw for 5,333 yards, 42 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His 30 touchdown passes in 2015 are tied for the most in a single season.

The quarterback’s famous “Jael Mary” pass to current Cleveland Browns wideout Jalen Strong put him at the forefront of one of the most iconic moments in program history and lifted ASU to a 38-34 road upset over No. 16 USC in 2015.

Between his stint in the AAF and finishing up at ASU, Bercovici spent time with both the Chargers and the Cardinals organizations in the NFL. He did not appear in a regular season NFL game.
