The Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line was hit with injury before the regular season began. And now, the first player to go down will be out for a while.

The Arizona Cardinals placed right tackle Marcus Gilbert on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Gilbert was ruled out of Arizona’s Week 1 contest against the Detroit Lions with a knee issue on Friday. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that it is a torn ACL, which would have Gilbert out the rest of the season.

In addition, the team announced the signing of offensive lineman Jordan Mills, whose expected signing was reported on Tuesday morning. The Cardinals also released linebacker Dante Booker from the practice squad.

The Cardinals acquired Gilbert in an offseason trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers as Arizona worked to fill their offensive line needs after a rough 2018 campaign.

It’s the latest lower-body injury for Arizona’s projected starting right tackle.

Gilbert missed all but five games in 2012 with torn tendons in his ankle before missing three starts each in 2014 and 2016 with ankle injuries.

In his last two seasons with the Steelers, Gilbert suffered a hamstring injury, missing five games in 2017. Then, he only made five starts in 2018 after he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Gilbert has started two full seasons (2013, 2015) in his eight-year career.

Backing up Gilbert on the team’s depth chart is rookie Brett Toth out of Army.

In addition to Gilbert, rookie offensive lineman Lamont Gaillard missed the season opener with a knee injury.
