The always reliable Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium groundskeeper Brian Johnson gave fans a preview of the field design Wednesday afternoon on Twitter in preparation for Saturday’s Territorial Cup game against the rival Arizona Wildcats.
Frank Kush Field will feature the iconic Sparky head within a dark outline of the state of Arizona at the 50-yard-line.
Circles with the acronym “O2V” are found on each of the 25-yard-lines. It stands for “onward to victory,” lyrics of Arizona State University’s fight song.
The end zones, meanwhile, remain unchanged.
After the Sun Devils’ upset of then-No. 6 Oregon at home on Nov. 23 and subsequent rushing of the field, Johnson tweeted he would paint a center logo for the following week matchup against UArizona that, “you’ll be talking about for years to come” if fans promised to never rush the field again.
He also added they could come to his house on Sunday after every win vs. a ranked opponent for unlimited Jägermeister shots.
For all my Twitter followers, let’s make a deal. You never rush the field again AND I’ll paint a center logo next week that you’ll be talking about for years to come AND after every win vs ranked opponents you can come to my house on Sunday for unlimited jagermeister shots. No word if the fans actually agreed to this deal. We’re guessing probably not and he painted the logo anyway out of the goodness of his heart.
The Sun Devils take on the Arizona Wildcats at 8 p.m. on Saturday. For those who can’t make it to the stadium, listen live on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
