The Arizona State Sun Devils qualifying for a bowl game checked an important box for the program under second-year head coach Herm Edwards.
But more than that, this year’s Sun Bowl matchup between ASU and Florida State got some recognition ahead of time for being a game that ought to be pretty fun to watch.
CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli ranked the bowl games one through 39 in order of which games are the best ones. He factored in the strength of the teams, matchup quality and styles of play, according to his own story.
ASU and Florida State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas was 23rd.
This is an even matchup that should be pretty fun to watch. You know Herm Edwards will have his team pumped up and ready to play, and Florida State will want to show off for new coach Mike Norvell.
Norvell, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Arizona State, takes over the Seminoles and may face his former employer in his debut game, should he coach for Florida State instead of Memphis. Edwards is looking to get his first bowl win with the Sun Devils after losing the Las Vegas Bowl to Fresno State at the end of the 2018 season.
Here’s where the two squads rank nationally in total offense and defense:
OFFENSE
Arizona State: 89th
Florida State: 64th
DEFENSE
Arizona State: 65th
Florida State: 99th
The Sun Bowl will take place on Dec. 31 at noon. Catch the action on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
