Countless resources are being affected by the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, and blood drives are one of them.

Since March 19, nearly 200 blood drives in the state of Arizona have been canceled, and the supply of blood has been running low because of it.

To help with that issue, the Arizona Cardinals and Dignity Health will host a blood drive at State Farm Stadium on Tuesday, March 31.

After slots completely filled up in less than 24 hours, the Cardinals extended the drive by two hours to open more spots.

However, the team announced on Saturday morning the new appointments filled even more quickly.

Only those who have registered and already been assigned an appointment will be able to donate Tuesday. Walk-ups will not be accommodated.

The Cardinals are in the works of planning more drives to meet a critical need.

“The enthusiastic and immediate response from the community for this blood drive has been overwhelming,” said Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill in a release. “We are so grateful to those who have registered to donate as well as to our partners at Cigna and Dignity Health and to Vitalant for hosting Tuesday’s event.

“The need is still great and we are in the process of planning additional events to accommodate those who were unable to participate in this initial effort.”

The size of State Farm Stadium has allowed the first blood donation event to meet the required standards of social distancing.
