Arizona Cardinals draft pick Josh Jones and Phoenix Suns small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. were teammates on the Bush High School basketball team in Texas.
Jones, the offensive tackle who was the Cardinals’ 72nd overall pick in the NFL Draft on Friday, received congratulatory tweets from Oubre on Twitter in the wake of the pick. Jones went to Houston and Oubre was a five-star one-and-done at Kansas, but the two shared a court in their high school days.
Jones and Oubre aren’t the same age, and Oubre went to two different high schools (the other was Findlay Prep in Nevada). But the two were together for a season in Texas and even played against Andrew and Aaron Harrison, who went on to play at Kentucky. Andrew was drafted by the Suns in 2015.
“We did. My sophomore year in high school, my first year at Bush, it was his junior year and we were on the same basketball team. We went all the way to the regional finals where we played the Harrison twins,” Jones said in a conference call with reporters Friday.
“We had a great team that year, we had a good relationship when he was here at Bush, man. I’m happy that he’s doing big things down there in Phoenix, man, it’s exciting.”
Oubre coined the phrase Valley Boyz in Arizona and had pop-up shop sales for a line of clothing. Perhaps he and Jones will have to collaborate together in their reuniting in the desert.
