Beginning the season looking in relatively strong shape injury-wise, the Arizona Cardinals had reality strike them early on during their 2020 opener.

Safety Jalen Thompson went down with an ankle injury two plays into the game, while starting center Mason Cole injured his hamstring later on in a 24-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Thompson landed on the injured reserve Thursday, while Cole was ruled out of the Week 2 home game against the Washington Football Team, coach Kliff Kingsbury said Friday.

Kingsbury also said tight end Maxx Williams (ankle) will miss the game at State Farm Stadium.

In Cole’s place, second-year center Lamont Gaillard will make his first NFL start after his pro debut in Week 1. Tight ends Dan Arnold and Darrell Daniels will carry the load with Williams injured.

In better news, Cardinals 2020 third-round pick Josh Jones was out on the field as a limited participant after being sidelined during the end of training camp and the first week of the season. The offensive tackle was dealing with an ankle injury of his own.
