The Arizona Cardinals worked out former Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Butt, 25, was selected by the Broncos in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Viewed as one of the most talented tight ends in the draft class, Butt slid in the draft because of injury concerns.

Those proved to be valid, as Butt spent all of 2017 recovering from a torn ACL before injuries in his rookie year kept him at only three games played. In those outings, Butt had eight receptions for 85 yards.

Butt’s recovery in the offseason had complications arise and he remained on injured reserve for all of 2019. He again struggled to stay healthy last season, playing in five games before the Broncos decided to not bring him back for 2021.

The Cardinals have a need for a playmaking tight end. With Dan Arnold off to Carolina, Maxx Williams and Darrell Daniels expect to take a bulk of the reps at the position. While they have been known for their blocking, the pair have yet to record more than a touchdown over the course of a season in their respective careers.

The team also went out and added tight end Ross Travis through free agency this offseason and have Ian Bunting on the roster.
