ESPN insider: Arizona Cardinals coach knows who his QB will be

With less than two weeks until the start of the regular season the Arizona Cardinals have yet to choose their starting quarterback.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has chosen rookie Russell Wilson over Matt Flynn to start Week 1 against the Cardinals, leaving Ken Whisenhunt as the only head coach without a clear starting signal caller heading into the regular season.

Whisenhunt is left with decision to choose between Kevin Kolb or John Skelton.

What’s interesting is Whisenhunt announced earlier this week that neither quarterback will start for Arizona’s last preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Instead, rookie Ryan Lindley, a sixth-round draft pick out of San Diego State, will suit up as the team’s starting quarterback. This comes as no surprise, as most teams elect to rest their starters in the final preseason game.

“He’s probably made his decision. He knows who he’s going to start at this point in time,” said ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. “I think people within the organization think that John Skelton is still the favorite but neither quarterback has distinguished themselves so far this summer.”

Kolb, who is in his second year of a five-year, $64 million contract, started most of the season last year and adds more mobility to the quarterback position, but led the Cardinals to a 3-6 record.

Under Skelton the Cardinals went 5-2, possibly because he had a knack for finding Larry Fitzgerald who had four 100-yard games. Three of those efforts went for more than 140 yards. He recorded only two 100-yard games with Kolb under center.
