ESPN insider: Cardinals taking care of young stars

Sep 7, 2012, 12:29 AM | Updated: 1:50 am

Most people agree that the Cardinals signing linebacker Daryl Washington to a new contract was a good move.

Washington, 25, is one of the team’s emerging defensive stars, and could be on the precipice of his first Pro Bowl campaign.

But even more than that, according to ESPN NFL insider John Clayton, the move shows the Cardinals are still moving in the right direction.

“I think anytime you take care of your own, particularly a good young player like Washington, I think that’s a good thing,” Clayton told Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf Thursday. “So I think league-wide it’s well accepted.”

Clayton noted how the Cardinals weren’t exactly overflowing with salary cap space, but found a way to get a deal done that keeps one of its better players around for a while.

“You want to try have a core group, and I think that’s what’s going to be important — particularly with the defense,” he said.
