LHP Tyler Gilbert called up by Diamondbacks for start vs. Reds

Jun 7, 2022, 12:40 PM

Left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert was called up Tuesday to start for the Arizona Diamondbacks in Cincinnati against the Reds.

Arizona moved reliever Taylor Widener to Triple-A Reno to make way for Gilbert.

Widener, who was pulled off the taxi squad on Friday, pitched 1.2 innings in a Monday loss to Cincinnati that saw him allow three earned runs and four hits. The Diamondbacks lost the game 7-0 after it was called due to rain in the seventh inning.

Gilbert, who was recalled from the taxi squad, fills in the fifth slot in the D-backs’ rotation after the team lost Humberto Castellanos (elbow) to the 15-day injured list last week.

Gilbert has three appearances for Arizona this year with two starts.

He’s allowed eight earned runs and five home runs over 14.1 innings with 12 strikeouts and four walks. Much of that damage came in his last start, a May 17 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he allowed six earned runs.

Prior to this year, Gilbert made his first nine appearances in MLB last season. He went 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA in that limited snap-shot, throwing a no-hitter in his first major league start on Aug. 14, 2021.

With Triple-A Reno this season, Gilbert has a 10.65 ERA in 23.2 innings. He’s allowed 28 earned runs with 15 walks and 12 strikeouts.

First pitch for Arizona-Cincinnati on Tuesday is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. on ESPN 620 AM and 98.7 FM HD-2. Gilbert will start opposite Reds pitcher Graham Ashcraft.
