What’s next for Jen Welter?

Sep 16, 2015, 2:11 PM | Updated: 5:02 pm

Jen Welter’s time as a coaching intern for the Arizona Cardinals may be over, but her world hasn’t slowed down yet.

“This is fantastic and exciting and a little bit weird at times, having people know who you are,” Welter said on Off the Edge with B-Train on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.

People may know who she is, but fame isn’t what excites her. There’s a different message that she’s proud to demonstrate.

“I wanted people to know that you could be an athlete and you could be smart.”

While Welter’s claim to fame came from being the first female coach in the NFL during her internship with the Cardinals this summer, her nickname “Dr. J” isn’t just a catchy title. Welter earned her PhD in psychology from Capella University.

“I’m most proud of letting people see that you can be the whole package as a woman,” Welter said. “You can be smart and you can be very well accomplished in what you do.”

So what’s on the horizon for Welter?

Well, she’s still trying to figure that out.

“I have a couple offers to coach oversees already, but I would really rather stay in the States if I can,” Welter said. “A couple of the coaches have said ‘don’t give up on the NFL yet this season’ because they’re still getting calls. That’s really what I’m hoping for.”

In the meantime, Welter is spending her time doing motivational speaking and media appearances.
