Is Braylon Edwards the right fit for the Arizona Cardinals?

With Steve Breaston leaving Arizona in favor of Kansas City, the Cardinals are in the market for a receiver to line up opposite of Larry Fitzgerald in the starting lineup. The question is who should they sign to be that guy.

Ron Wolfley, host of Sports 620 KTAR’s the Doug and Wolf, has someone in mind for the job.

“I wish it was Malcom Floyd,” Wolf said Monday morning. “I want Malcom Floyd. I’d love to have him as the No. 2 receiver here.”

While Floyd’s name hasn’t been directly connected to the Cardinals this offseason, one other big name receiver has. According to reports the representatives for Braylon Edwards have been negotiating with Arizona and may be close on a contract.

“The one thing Braylon Edwards can still do is line up and catch the deep ball,” Wolf said. “That’s the one thing the guy can still do.

“You need a two who is going to threaten a defensive coordinator or threaten a secondary. I think Braylon Edwards, even though he’s got the dropsies, can still do that.”

Edwards has had his fair share of issues over his seven year career. He has struggled with injuries, off the field problems and the perception that he’s a locker room distraction. With that said, his talent on the field is undeniable.

Last year as a member of the New York Jets, he had 53 catches for 903 yards, 7 touchdowns and an impressive 17 yards-per-catch in an offense that wasn’t exactly pass happy. His best season came in 2007 when, as a member of the Cleveland Browns, he caught 80 passes for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns (ironically enough his quarterback was Derek Anderson that season. Yes, that Derek Anderson).

Some, including Wolf, may find Floyd to be a better option but Edwards seems like he would be a great addition to a receiving corps that took a huge hit with the loss of Breaston.
