Sure, watching any position player attempt to retire major league hitters is entertaining.

But what Cincinnati Reds shortstop Scooter Gennett said after the game topped anything he did on the mound.

Entering the eighth inning, with the Chicago Cubs ahead of his Reds, 15-5, on Monday at Wrigley Field, the 27-year-old took the mound in relief.

Asked about his sidearm curveball, he corrected a reporter.

“It’s a fastball. It’s just not too fast,” he said. “It’s a little different when there’s a hitter in the box. Like in warmups, I thought I was the best pitcher ever and then the hitter started to get up there and humble me up real quickly.”

Later, Gennett said he thought he threw 96-97 mph. A member of the media quickly corrected him.

The radar gun clocked Gennett at 68 mph.

“Yeah, I don’t believe that,” he said, speaking about his velocity. “Yeah, that (radar gun readings), Statcast, all of that is fake news.”

Gennett’s hilarious comments did not stop there.

Responding to a Deadspin story on Twitter, Gennett backed up his comments with evidence only he could have presented.
